Quality Teaching Survey

Teacher:
  1. All teaching should aim at focussing the learner on positive future skills, attributes and mindsets. Education is about 'future proofing'. Students will need to learn to thrive in uncertainty and un-predicability.

    Are your students future orientated?

    0 <-----------------------------------> 10

  2. To achieve quality we need to do fewer things well. Need to help students reach for their personal best. Slowing the pace of student's work is important to develop quality and to allow time to teach/'coach'.

    Are your students producing quality?

    0 <-----------------------------------> 10

  3. To do this we need to see ourselves as a 'coach' - always asking for that little more effort, encouraging students to set small achievable goals, to take responsibility for their own growth, and always to keep the image of a successful future learner in their mind. Coaches need to be aware of skills and strategies to be taught.

    Do you set goals with students?

    0 <-----------------------------------> 10

  4. The phrase 'focussed teaching' is the key to being a good 'coach'. Teach only one or two things at a time- and ensure this skill is in place. Let the students know what the skill /strategy is you are helping them with.

    Is this part of your teaching?

    0 <-----------------------------------> 10

  5. All our teaching should result in students being aware of the goals, strategies and skills involved in any learning - students should know what, why and how they are doing anything.

    Are all students aware of goals, strategies?

    0 <-----------------------------------> 10

  6. If the above is successful, students will be aware of the process of doing anything - know how! The process should be seen on the wall, in the front of their books.

    Are processes seen in the class?

    0 <-----------------------------------> 10

  7. All work is improved if students are helped to focus and then talk, write, draw, research. Once the task is focused then students need to elaborate - this is the key to quality language, science and art. Observational drawing is an excellent activity to encourage slowing the pace and encouraging work of depth - as well it is an opportunity to reflect and then ask questions for further study.

    Is there quality focussed work to be seen?

    0 <-----------------------------------> 10

  8. A quality coach provides instant feedback to a learner and positive suggestions to improve through 'learning conversations'. As well the students should be involved insetting the success criteria and be encouraged to self evaluate their own progress - this is a vital attribute for a future learner. Criteria should be visible in the room or in books.

    Are students involved in self-assessment?

    0 <-----------------------------------> 10

  9. The basic coaching strategy is an interactive model (constructivist teaching) where teachers find out what students first can do or know (questions and prior ideas) and then negotiate activities to challenge and extend their ideas. This can also be called 'action learning' involving information technology.

    Do you use an interactive/action learning model?

    0 <-----------------------------------> 10

  10. To achieve the above students need to be aware of class organisation and programmes and in particular group activities. Students need to be able to work on tasks without direct supervision. The best test of the teachers planning is when the teacher is away for the day - or wet lunchtimes! The blackboards should outline expectations, goals and tasks.

    Are classroom organisations explicit?

    0 <-----------------------------------> 10

  11. Classroom environment and displays should reflect all the above. A range of topics, goals, processes. The classroom is a reflection of the creativity of the students and the skill of the teacher.

    Does your classroom reflect quality learning and processes?

    0 <-----------------------------------> 10

  12. Which of the following are a feature of your programme - 1 to 10

    • Realistic studies/ projects/ problem solving in maths
    • Integration of learning around themes, topics etc?
    • Multiple Intelligences?
    • Co operative learning where students have the skills?
    • Integrated use of Information Technology?
    • Teaching of thinking - if so what approach?
    • Any thing else you make use of that is important to you?
What are your current concerns?
What are your solutions to your concerns?
What should we do less of?
What professional development needs do you have?

All the above contribute to the vision of a Quality School.
Once schools can assure parents of basic numeracy and literacy the above add quality and excitement.
If both basic numeracy and literacy and quality teaching/learning are in place then the school has both consistency of purpose and individual initiative and creativity.
